MEET THE CLIENT

Salvador Molly's Restaurant is one of the more iconic restaurants in Portland, Oregon and describes itself as, "An eclectic mix of global flavors served in a vibrantly decorated room with a pirate theme." Their eating challenge, "Great Balls of Fire", has been featured on various dining television shows and recognized worldwide. They are active and supportive of their local community, including donating part of their profits to the Make-a-Wish foundation. Salvador Molly's encompasses a fun atmosphere, perfect for casual or special events, and their hundreds of reviews speaks for itself as a Portland favorite.

CHALLENGES

Rick, the original owner of Salvador Molly's, came to us because he had hired someone else to build his website but it wasn't functioning properly, which was negatively affecting business. He recognized that a professional website is crucial to the longterm success of the restaurant.

Many of his patrons viewed his website either before or after dining, so he wanted to be sure they kept coming back by encouraging interaction with the website and improving the rate of recurring customers by giving them clear access to the address, hours, menu items, daily specials, his regularly updated food and travel blog, and their mailing list where they sends out specials and events. He wanted to increase subscription rates, improve retention of subscribers by creating interesting content on the website, and building a hub where customers could come and check out what's new at the restaurant.

Since this restaurant is a Portland favorite, we knew we needed to impress the Portland Foodie crowd in order to keep them coming back for more. He knew he wanted a tropical theme to fit the restaurant, but beyond that, he left the creative direction to us.

I'm delighted with Ellie's work on our restaurant's website for Salvador Molly's. She took our old website and turned it around after we hired a different designer that didn't meet deadlines and was extending the project over budget. Now, our new website is perfect! It was affordable, it's attractive, easy to use and update, and really works well. Our diners can find what they're looking for quickly and easily and we've steadily seen an increase in signups to our newsletter since the relaunch. Best of all, the little flourishes she added that make it exciting!

OUR SOLUTION

After we took a look around their existing website, we immediately recognized that it needed a completely new start. Unless the client comes to us wanting that, it's not the step we recommend unless there's no other way around it. Since their website was barely functioning on its outdated themes and plugins, it left their website broken and open to security risks. The design itself needed a lot of work, but it must be built on a strong infrastructure in order to maintain its integrity and serve the business well for the longterm.

We basically broke it down to built it back up again, taking from it what we needed to do the rebuild and creating it all on a dev site so that nothing from the old infrastructure would break the new one. We built it using well supported, regularly updated, and strong components then designed the website with a look and feel that both attracted the customer visually and allowed them to find all the information they were looking for. The site now brings in new subscribers daily to their newsletter. They've since renovated the restaurant, brought on new staff, and are thriving due in part to a website that their customers love to interact with and keeps them informed of the latest specials and other events. We have them on a monthly care plan to maintain their site at all times. In addition to their website, we also design many of their print advertisements and promotional fliers.
